The Community Legal Clinic is proud to introduce a new program, the Alberta Rural Legal Assistance Initiative. Supported by the Alberta Law Foundation and an Anonymous Donor, the Community Legal Clinic is now offering extended follow-up support services to clients in rural areas including Medicine Hat, Lloydminster, and Fort McMurray, in addition to its offerings in Central Alberta. This service allows individuals who are traditionally unable to obtain legal assistance due to lack of finances or ineligibility with Legal Aid to access the support of a lawyer who can provide unbundled, limited-scope retainer services at no charge. The Clinic’s newest staff lawyer addition has familiarity with many areas of law, including family law, debt & civil claims issues, employment law, and landlord/tenant conflicts, and is able to provide services such as advice, court preparation & coaching, document drafting, negotiations, and help in connecting clients with local community resources for dealing with specialized problems. The Initiative’s goal is to help individuals in rural areas obtain the advice and resources they need to be able to successfully carry their cases forward and resolve their legal problems.
Individuals who are interested in accessing the Community Legal Clinic’s services may contact the Community Legal Clinic at [email protected] or at 1-877-317-9129. Lawyers and other support workers who are seeking to refer individuals into the Clinic are also encouraged to reach out to discuss various options for such referrals, and to learn more about the service offerings. As always, the Community Legal Clinic is always seeking volunteers to help staff its regular summary legal advice clinics and Ask-A-Lawyer events, and welcome individual lawyers and legal support staff to reach out if they would like to get involved.
